Building work has begun at Southport Town Hall to make the landmark site more energy efficient.

The work is starting with scaffolding going up at the start of COP26, as Sefton Council asks local residents, businesses and partners to make a pledge to reduce their emissions.

The scaffolding and building work that passers-by can now see at Southport Town Hall, on Lord Street, is in relation to energy efficiency and insulation works which will be taking place over the next few months.

Back in March Sefton Council was successful in a funding bid to the Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund for over £800,000.

Specialist improvement and refurbishment works have been scheduled to take place at Southport Town Hall and Bootle Town Hall, which is aimed at reducing heat loss and restoring the buildings’ historic features.

A specialist heritage contractor is undertaking the work at both sites, ensuring that key historic features are maintained and protected.

The work will improve insulation in both buildings making them more energy efficient and significantly reducing their carbon consumption.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council Cabinet Member for Regulatory and Customers Services said:

“The town halls are a vital part of the heritage of the borough of Sefton and are much loved and valued by our communities, so maintaining them to a high standard is a key priority.

“I’m delighted to see these carbon saving projects are getting underway at our town halls as this is a crucial element of reducing the council’s carbon footprint.

“We must make every effort to reduce carbon consumption at council owned sites to make progress towards net zero carbon by 2030.

“These historic buildings are notoriously poor on energy efficiency and I am pleased that we are addressing these issues as we move towards a greener future.”

To mark the start of COP26, Sefton Council is encouraging residents, businesses and partners to make a pledge to reduce their emissions.

Following the 2019 declaration of a Climate Emergency in Sefton, the council is reaffirming its pledge to be net zero carbon by 2030 for all council activities.

People are being asked to go #OneStepGreener for the planet and make a small change.

The pledge could be something small like walking more short journeys, using more public transport or eating local, seasonal foods. For those who can go further, they could install solar panels, eat less meat or switch to an electric vehicle.
