What improvements would you like to see take place in Southport town centre?
Sefton Council has launched a brand new consultation to seek the views of residents, businesses and visitors to the resort about future improvements to the area – which you can complete here: yourseftonyoursay.sefton.gov.uk/futuresouthport/
The consultation is open until 18th March 2022.
In 2020 plans were publicly revealed which would be designed to support Southport’s return to the grandeur of Victorian England, when it was the country’s second most popular tourist destination.
The project, dubbed “Les Transformations de Southport”, aims to support the town’s businesses by improving the connectivity across the whole town centre, including improved pedestrian facilities, better links to the railway station and the creation of new public spaces for hosting events.
Now a consultation has been launched for Phase One of the scheme, seeking out views about public access and how people move and travel through the town centre, as well as looking to gauge support on new public realm enhancements in the Chapel Street and Market areas.
Business owners, schools, visitors, the transport and tourism sectors are being encouraged to contribute their views alongside residents from the wider area around Southport.
People will be asked for their views on a number of areas, including:
- Lighting and benches on Chapel Street
- Improving the appearance of the Southport Station Entrance
- Changes to the Market Quarter
- Better pedestrian provision on Eastbank Street
- Improved street signage
- Future phases and areas of focus
Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills, said: “The town centre is dominated by north-south movements, particularly by vehicles, and there are many competing demands for highway space which can be difficult to accommodate.
“The post Covid-19 decline in public transport use may also create additional pressure on the highway network to accommodate private vehicles.
“Phase 1 is the beginning of our attempts to address these issues, provide infrastructure which allows for better access, along with the associated health and well-being outcomes.”
As an accountable body for the project, Sefton Council will administer the consultation process on behalf of the Southport Town Deal board.
The consultation is open until 18th March 2022. To have your say visit: futuresouthport – Sefton Council – Citizen Space

I don’t understand ‘connectivity’ – we’ve already got pavements, what else do you suggest? It all sounds wishy-washy management speak, with no detail. The only thing I could pick out were benches with lighting.
East bank Street and the market area are hardly used, apart from the brilliant market restaurant. 12 million pounds sounds an enormous sum for very little.
Lord Street should be your focus. Reduce the retail area and have the buildings at each end converted into flats – maybe subsided housing.
An open air swimming pool would be a marvellous addition. It would attract hundreds of people, as the old one did. There is nowhere in Southport to enjoy the sun as we’ve no beach.
Clear the beach – persuade Preston to start dredging again. Lord Street and the front should be your focus. That’s were visitors go.
Excellent. The beach is not used. Why? Beach volleyball, sand yachting. Public ‘restrooms’ or loos. Secure cycle parking – if you cycle in you need to park. I can’t afford to have another stolen.
The run down building are in dire need of help, to repair and attract new businesses in them.
The area that is mentioned is pedestrianised, and there are benches, and lighting, so I don’t know what else is needed?
Any empty buildings, ask youngsters to design murals and the best designs,
They can do paintings in the windows of the buildings until they are occupied again.,
Makes them nicer than they are if in a bad state.
Also can help to keep some youngsters out of trouble?
The old NHS building at the top of Albert road,/ park road,
Could this not be a spa hotel, if nothing else has been planned for it?
