One of the most established local businesses in Southport is celebrating winning the title of Southport Health and Fitness Venue of the Year.

Victoria Health and Leisure Club, situated on the Promenade, was awarded the title at the recent Your Southport Stars Awards, organised by Southport BID.

It was a prestigious title to win with over 80,000 individual public votes cast across 11 categories.

Victoria Leisure Director Peter Birch said: “We were very honoured to win the 2024 Southport Health and Fitness Venue of the Year.

“It is a privilege to be recognised for the quality of our offer and the levels of service that our team provides to our members.”

It is a very competitive market and at Victoria Leisure the team are always working hard to offer something new and have just introduced Spin TV alongside their instructor led Spin classes.

The spin classes are extremely popular but with the demands on people’s time, not everyone can make every class so they can now pick up a class at their convenience.

Bertie Cunningham from Southport BID worked with Marketing and Comms’ manager Steve. The Video footage of 2 full instructors classes, that members can now come in, and use at their leisure in very impressive high quality HD.

With over 3,000 members there are amazing choices here, to enjoy for people of all ages and all abilities.

Victoria Leisure is famous for their ‘three gyms and three pools’ including substantial amounts of equipment and variety of classes. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and free weights Power Gym area are at the front and rear of the Main Gym.

The Ladies’ Gym, connects directly to the Ladies changing room, and Family Gym (for 11-15 year olds) gives the venue so many choices and ranges of equipment, with a friendly, supportive team.

Victoria Leisure is situated inside one of Southport’s most historic and impressive landmark buildings – the old Victoria baths, dating back to the 1800s.

It was home to Southport Squash Club in the 1980s. Back then, it was home to squash courts, a swimming pool – and even a licensed bar!

Urgent changes were needed to secure its future and attract the investment needed to renovate the building and keep it open.

A successful proposal was made from Wally Birch as a founder member of the squash club, who then went on to run the venue for many years before passing the reins to his son, Victoria Leisure Finance and Operations Director Peter Birch .

Peter said: “We still have one squash court and work hard to maintain the heritage of this beautiful building and the nature of the club changed during the 1990’s. As mid sized health & fitness club we are in the unique position to offer Gyms, Classes Swimminng Pools, Hot Spa Facilities and a Squash Court.”

Victoria Leisure is a family-owned, independent local business, and that really comes across Members and guests at Victoria Leisure are always guaranteed a warm welcome.

The club has generations of families who have used the club as a key part of their fitness and leisure time, and The Victoria staff team have a legacy of raising funds for Cancer Research on many occasions across 35 years.

Peter added “we are committed to having a fully supportive team in the gym who are on our staff team, ready to assist and develop people’s fitness journey.

The team is there to advise, demonstrate, encourage and ensure you are on the best path for a fit and healthy plan.

Should you want more intense one-on-one development and motivation, then Personal Training is available but this is merely and optional support – our members can work with our team as part of their membership.”  Every membership includes an extensive programme of group fitness classes and free members parking nearby.
