Today (Tuesday 24th February 2026) tragically marks the fourth anniversary of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, but support for the plight of the Ukrainians remains undiminished in Southport and across Sefton.
The public response to the Ukrainian Day event at The Atkinson in Southport on Saturday was almost overwhelming with huge numbers of people showing their support and many touching and heartfelt messages left on the Ukrainian flag in the first floor cafe at the venue.
Local councillor John Pugh said: “There can be no doubt where the sympathies of Southport lie.
“They are just as strong as they were when we initially protested about the war back in 2022.
“Good wishes do not win wars but emphasising the level of public support for Ukraine is certainly not news they want to hear in Moscow. Putin relies on weakening and wearing out the resolve of the West.
“Expressing support is a little thing to do compared to the horrendous sacrifices Ukrainians have to make, but it needs to happen.
“It may be time to reissue the ‘Southport Solidarity with Ukraine’ poster and certainly if anyone wants one, just e-mail me at cllrjohnpugh@gmail.com
“It is marvellous that Sefton Council allowed The Atkinson to be used for this event, but they are on a promise to find a building for our Ukrainian guests to use as drop-in and community centre, following the closure of a very successful Ukrainian centre in Crosby.
“It was agreed to progress the matter at a previous Council meeting.
“It’s important that this small beleaguered community, scattered all over town, has a place to meet and enjoy their culture so magnificently displayed at The Atkinson.
“If the council can’t help provide that, it should through its links be able to find an organisation that will.”
