Tributes have been paid to much-loved Southport radio presenter and community campaigner Cassie James.

Cassie, a presenter with Mighty Radio, had fought a long battle with cancer.

Family and friends raised thousands of pounds for her in an appeal to try to secure treatment abroad after she was told by doctors that she would not live until Christmas.

Despite her gruelling cancer treatment in recent years, Cassie remained determined to use her role on the radio to highlight people doing exceptional things in Southport.

During the Covid campaign, she began a campaign to highlight where people could obtain food deliveries locally.

In a statement, her family said: “It is with the heaviest heart to be writing this, after a long battle with cancer Mum passed away yesterday evening she was surrounded by her family and without pain at the very end.

“She is the strongest lady and she put up one hell of a fight even the nurses were amazed with her strength.

“We hope to celebrate her life in a way we know she wanted.

Once arrangements have been made we will add a post here and invite you all to celebrate.”

Mighty FM Station Manager Paul Tasker posted: “Was a pleasure to have known and worked with you Cassie James. We did so much and you made great radio.

“You had a massive listener club and Southport was right behind you. The listeners followed your campaign and journey and you kept fighting, you never gave up.

“You will never be forgotten by all at Mighty Radio. Heaven has gained a true radio star.. .you always had a laugh and a smile. Thinking of all your family at this sad time.”

Artist Robert Newbiggin said: “Just heard the news Cassie James, one of the best friends I’ve ever had has died. She was always there for everybody

“I’ll miss our long phone chats putting the world to rights, visiting you and thanking you for all your help you gave me and the girls.

“Cassie you were one amazing inspirational Woman RIP my friend.”

The radio presenter, from Southport, previously battled bilateral breast cancer, a lesion in her brain and melanoma in her foot and groin.

Cassie has two children, Jonny Wright who lives and works in Manchester as a conveyancer, and Stacey Wright, a designer for H&M, who lives in Sweden.

She had a very tough time with her health over the last few years.

She was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in August 2016 and they also discovered a lesion in her brain from the breast cancer. This staged her at stage 4, half way through her treatment she was told she had a melanoma on the sole of her foot as well.

She also suffered with stage 4 skin cancer.

Cassie worked for several years as a volunteer radio presenter for local community radio station Mighty Radio here in Southport and had a mid-morning show 10am till 1pm Monday to Saturday and Sunday 10am till 12pm midday seven days a week.

During lockdown she was an amazing support for the community of Southport as she kept the listeners informed of all the local businesses that were trading and doing deliveries.

She never missed a show despite her ongoing cancer treatment.

Throughout all of this Cassie had to undergo treatment for breast cancer with Clatterbridge Hospital nurses coming to her home every three weeks where she had intravenous medications.

Mighty FM Station Manager Paul Tasker said: “Cassie was at Mighty from the very start. Since we launched on FM, she worked every day and gave up her time every day to commit to her radio show.

“She even worked round her hospital appointments in order for her to still do radio shows from home. On odd occasions she presented her radio shows from her hospital bedside. She was so dedicated to her work.

“Cassie has done lots of fundraising for community projects, helped find people accommodation, including international nurses throughout the pandemic. She would always help anyone.”
