There’s an astonishing community effort happening today – in this scorching heat – to make Southport’s Town Hall Gardens bloom with floral colour this summertime.
It’s brilliant teamwork by a variety of volunteers supported by Sefton Council and with volunteers from Sefton Council to install and fill brand-new planters.
Built by the creative workers at both Bootle tool shed and Natural Alternatives, the new planters are being filled with floral blooms and evergreens to bring a burst of colour to the area outside The Atkinson on Lord Street.

Sefton Council staff are using volunteering hours to work alongside the Lord Street In Bloom Garden Volunteers group to fill the planters over the coming days with compost, bedding, soil, plants and flowers.
The planters have been created by both the Bootle Tool Shed and Green Sefton’s Natural Alternatives team – a biodiversity and access programme providing work and training opportunities for disengaged young people, vulnerable adults and young people with learning disabilities.

Work has already taken place in the Town Hall Gardens thanks to Sefton Council’s contractor Dowhigh Civil Engineering which has helped dig out the borders and beds around the site.
Cllr Liz Dowd, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnership Engagement, said:
“Southport will be awash with gorgeous floral colour thanks to the addition of these new planters, which will transform the space outside The Atkinson for everyone to enjoy this summer.
“Sefton Council officers are dedicating their volunteering hours to make sure the planters are filled out, under the ever watchful eye and guidance of the wonderful Lord Street In Bloom volunteers, who proposed this idea late last year.

“I’d like to thank the creative and handy teams at both Bootle Tool Shed and Green Sefton’s Natural Alternatives for building these bespoke planters over recent weeks, and Lord St in Bloom for their ongoing support in enhancing this part of Southport’s town centre, and I know everyone who visits Southport in the coming months will really enjoy this revamped space in the heart of the town centre.”

Pauline Morris, founder of the Lord Street In Bloom Volunteers, said:
“We are really pleased to see this area being enhanced. The planters will be filled with lots of colour and will give the whole area a much needed lift.
“Our green spaces along Lord Street are enjoyed by lots of residents and visitors. It’s really important we keep them looking lovely for everyone to enjoy.”
