Massams Supplies has launched a free sunflower growing competition open to local primary schools.
There are lots of schools across Southport, West Lancashire and Liverpool already taking part, with more invited to get in touch.
This superb local initiative has had a superb response already with 4,000 local children already taking part.
If you’re growing sunflowers we’d love to see you posting your pictures in our Stand Up For Southport Facebook group!
The competition is designed to encourage children to get involved with nature, learn how to grow plants and take part in a fun, healthy competition.
As a local family business, Massams Supplies wanted to create something that gives back to the community while getting children excited about the outdoors.
The firm is based on Renacres Hall Farm, Renacres Lane, Halsall, near Southport.
A Massams Supplies spokesperson said:
“We are providing every participating pupil with a completely free Sunflower Starter Pack, which includes a pot, compost, three sunflower seeds and simple growing instructions.
“The idea is for each child to grow their own sunflower and take part in a friendly competition to see who can grow the tallest plant!
“So far, we already have 25 schools on board, with just over 4,000 pupils taking part.
“We started contacting schools just three days ago and it’s spiralled which is amazing!
“The schools involved are spread right across the North West, including Southport, Ormskirk, Formby, and Liverpool. We have successfully delivered to 5 schools and are continuing to do so before the Easter break.
“There is no cost involved for schools or families, as all materials have been funded by us, Massams Supplies, as part of our commitment to supporting local schools and the wider community.
“To make the competition even more exciting, there will be prizes to be won that have been kindly donated by local businesses such as Farmer Ted’s Adventure Farm, Acorn Farm, Martin Mere and Fun Arena, helping to make this a true community project.
“The winning sunflowers will be announced just before the summer holidays.
“The project will begin with seed planting between late March and mid-April, with sunflowers expected to bloom between July and early August. Schools simply need to confirm participation so we can prepare and deliver the starter packs.
“We would love to see as many local schools involved as possible and thought this would make a great community initiative.
“As a local family business, we simply want to spread some positivity and create a feel-good story for families and children across North West communities, showing the positive things happening locally and bringing schools together through a fun community project.”
