Chapel Street in Southport town centre will undergo a temporary road closure for vehicles of up to three weeks while work takes place to support the creation of a new Greggs store.

Sefton Council’s Head of Highways and Public Protection has authorised a Temporary Road Closure Order for any period up to 21 days duration.

It will enable contractors to carry out sewer connection works to the new Greggs store being built at 41-49 Chapel Street, in the vacant unit previously occupied by H&M.

Sefton Council says that in order to maintain safety for operatives and road users, it will be necessary to close Chapel Street, Southport near properties 41-49.

Work will commence on Sunday 19th April 2026 and is due to be completed by Saturday 9th May 2026.

The diversion route for all traffic will be via:

A – Chapel Street – Tulketh Street and vice versa

B – Chapel Street – London Street and vice versa

Sefton says: “Access will be maintained wherever possible for the emergency services and for residents.

“The contractor has been informed of his obligation to carry out the works in accordance with

Chapter Eight of the Traffic Signs Manual.”

Greggs has submitted plans to Sefron Council to open its new outlet at 41-49 Chapel Street.

It will be situated between the New Look clothes shop and Boots the chemist.

It was previously occupied by the H&M fashion shop which closed in 2016.

H&M had served shoppers after first opening in 2010 in one section of the former Woolworths store, which had been split into three units after the chain went bankrupt.

Greggs has now submitted plans to Sefton Council’s planning department seeking advertisement consent to display one externally illuminated projecting sign and one externally illuminated fascia sign.

It’s more positive news for Chapel Street, which is seeing the ongoing transformation of the former BHS department store into new commercial units and apartments.

Greggs was founded by John Gregg in Newcastle over 80 years ago, and now has over 2,000 Greggs stores across the UK, although none in Southport – until now.

A Greggs spokesperson said: “Greggs is always looking into new shop locations. While we are unable to confirm anything at the moment, we will share any information in due course.”
