People in Southport are being urged to stay sensible and limit the number of people they see as pubs, restaurants, bars, guest houses and hairdressers prepare to reopen this Saturday (July 4) after nearly four months in lockdown.

Boris Johnson today announced that pubs will be able to open their doors from  6am tomorrow as he pleaded with revellers to be ‘sensible’ on ‘Super Saturday’.

Hairdressers and barbers will be able to open from midnight tonight.

The Prime Minister said that he wanted people to use the loosening of lockdown in England to ‘enjoy summer’.

But he insists that the success of the move is down to whether people act ‘responsibly’, urging the public not to ‘let down’ the sectors of the economy that desperately need to reopen safely.

The 6am opening time tomorrow prevents any pubs from opening at midnight tonight as some had originally expected.

Boris Johnson said: “Tomorrow we come to step three of the plan that I set out on May 10, that everybody, I think, has understood, or huge numbers of people have understood and followed very carefully and very closely,” he told LBC.

“And it’s because people stuck to that plan that we’re now able to carefully and cautiously open up hospitality tomorrow. And my message is really for people to enjoy summer sensibly and make sure that it all works.”

Sefton health professionals are now encouraging people to stay safe and continue to play their part in reducing the spread of coronavirus.

From 4 July, as the infection rates of coronavirus continues to fall, new guidance will allow additional businesses to open, people can meet in groups of up to two households in any location and can stay overnight away from their home with members of one other household.

Margaret Jones, Interim Director of Public Health for Sefton, said: “With the easing of the lockdown more and more people will be out and about. If you can, you should avoid using public transport, and aim to walk, cycle or drive instead. If you do need to use public transport to complete your journey you should follow the guidelines in place and wear a face covering. It is not possible to socially distance during car journeys, so avoid travelling in a car with someone who is not part of your household.”

Dr Rob Caudwell, chair of NHS Southport and Formby CCG, said: “If you are clinically vulnerable, meaning that you could be at higher risk of severe illness from coronavirus you can now meet people outdoors, and from 4 July, indoors but you need to be especially careful and diligent about social distancing and hand hygiene.

“We all know it is very important to do what we can to reduce the risk of people getting ill with coronavirus. Remember that by following the guidance set out, you are helping to protect yourself, your family, the NHS and your community.”
