Southport is bracing itself for the arrival of Storm Corrie this Sunday.
The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for Wind for Southport, the rest of the North of England and Southern Scotland from around 3pm this Sunday (30th January) until around midday on Monday (31st January).
Meteorologists are warning people to expect ‘inland gusts’ of 60-70mph or up to 90mph on exposed coastal locations.
The Met Office’s Weather Warning for the North of Scotland has this evening been upgraded from Yellow to Amber.
They warn that all modes of public transport could be affected, roads and bridges may close, and power cuts could occur.
Dan Suri, chief meteorologist for the Met Office, said: “Storm Corrie will bring very strong winds to the north of the UK, especially northern Scotland, on Sunday. This follows just one day after Storm Malik moves though also bringing a spell of very strong winds.
“Storm Corrie will bring gusts of up to 90mph in exposed coastal locations in northern Scotland, with 70-80mph gusts more widely in the north. With back-to-back storms there could be updates to severe weather warnings, so keep an eye on the Met Office forecast.”
A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “On Sunday evening a spell of strong northwesterly winds is likely to develop across western Scotland, and then progress southeastwards eventually easing away from the North Sea coastlines during Monday morning.
“The strongest wind gusts will mostly occur around the coastlines and over the hills, with many of these exposed locations expected to see gusts reach 50-60 mph for a time. In addition, a small chance that a very limited part of the area could see a short period of more damaging gusts, that could reach 60-70mph inland, and 70-80mph around exposed coasts and hills.”
