People can enjoy a look inside Southport’s oldest church this weekend.
St. Cuthberts Church, on St. Cuthberts Road, in Churchtown Village, PR9 7NN will open its doors to visitors between 11am and 3.30pm as part of this year’s Southport Heritage Open Days Festival, which includes opportunities to explore venues across town between 11th and 20th September 2026.
Admission is free, as with all Heritage Open Days events. Pre-booking is not required.
St Cuthbert’s is Southport’s oldest church, with a church having been on this site since 1178.
View this beautiful building’s stained glass windows, while the wooden carving (reredos) behind the altar and altar rails, originally from St Peter’s Church Liverpool, was used as a procathedral church prior to the current Anglican Cathedral being built.
There are also Coronation Chairs from the Coronation of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Whilst in the Churchyard, see the graves of the seven fishermen who were lost in the fog disaster of 1869.
You can also see the recently restored grave of Private George Richard Masters, who won the Victoria Cross during World War One.
Private Richard George Masters VC was awarded Britain’s highest honour for his bravery in the First World War on 9th April 1918 when he rescued 200 wounded men despite being shelled, with the road being swept by machine gun fire – and even bombed by an aircraft.
He was 41 years old at the time and was serving in the RASC.
