Southport Rugby Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former First XV captain Roy “Billy” Beetham, who passed away on Wednesday 6th of May 2026.

A Southport RFC spokesperson said: “He was a hugely respected figure both on and off the field and someone who represented Southport RFC with immense pride and commitment throughout.

“A former First XV captain from 1994 to 1997, Billy led the club during a memorable period in its history, including the successful 1996/97 season which saw Southport crowned South Lancashire and Cheshire Division Two champions.

“An outstanding and uncompromising player, Billy began his rugby career in the back row before later moving to hooker. He earned a reputation as a hard tackling, no nonsense forward who gave everything for the badge every time he stepped onto the pitch.

“Those qualities extended far beyond matchdays and into training, where many former teammates will fondly remember Billy’s fiercely competitive nature.

“Even in touch rugby sessions, players often found themselves on the receiving end of one of “Billy’s trademark two touch hits, usually ending up in a heap on the floor much to the amusement of those around him.

“Billy will be remembered not only for his contribution as a player and captain, but also for the character, humour and presence he brought to the rugby club. He leaves behind many lasting memories and friendships formed through Southport RFC.

“Everyone at Southport RFC sends its sincere condolences to all members of the Beetham family and to Billy’s many friends and former teammates at this difficult time.

“A full obituary and details regarding funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.”
