Southport Rugby Football Club is delighted to announce the launch of an expanded Schools Rugby Programme, made possible with the generous support of Elsie’s Story Charitable Trust.
The programme will give more local boys and girls the opportunity to experience rugby in a fun, safe and inclusive environment.
Southport RFC’s Community Rugby Coaches will work directly with local schools, delivering dedicated coaching sessions and providing equipment including rugby balls, bibs, cones and tag belts.
The ambition is to support up to 10 local schools, with each receiving up to four hours of dedicated rugby coaching.
The initiative builds on Southport RFC’s commitment to increasing participation in sport and introducing young people to the positive values associated with rugby, including teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.
Colin Toohey, Director of Mini and Junior Rugby at Southport RFC, said:
“Rugby is about so much more than what happens on the pitch. It gives children the chance to make friends, build confidence, work as a team and, most importantly, have fun.
“We want to take that experience into our local schools and give as many boys and girls as possible the opportunity to discover rugby. We are incredibly grateful to Elsie’s Story Charitable Trust for their support in making this programme possible. Their support will help us reach more children in our community and give them an opportunity to experience everything that rugby has to offer.
“If they enjoy their first taste of the game and want to continue that journey with us at Southport RFC, our doors will always be open.”
Jenni Stancombe, Elsie’s mum and founder of Elsie’s Story, said:
“We’re really pleased to be supporting Southport RFC with this fantastic initiative. One of the aims of Elsie’s Story is to create smiles for young people, so being able to support a programme that will introduce more local children to rugby while having fun feels really special to us.
“None of this would be possible without the kindness and generosity of the people who support Elsie’s Story. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who donates in Elsie’s name and helps us create positive opportunities for young people in our community. It means so much to be able to turn that generosity into something that will make a real difference to local children.” Southport RFC already provides rugby opportunities for more than 300 children through its Mini and Junior section. The Schools’ Rugby Programme will enable the club to reach youngsters who may never previously have had the opportunity to try the sport. The programme forms part of the club’s wider ambition to grow grassroots rugby in the Southport area and ensure that Southport RFC continues to flourish as an inclusive community club for generations to come.
Southport RFC would like to place on record its thanks to Elsie’s Story Charitable Trust for helping turn the programme into a reality and supporting opportunities for young people in the local community.
