Additional security measures and longer road closures will be in place when Remembrance Sunday services take place in Southport and across Sefton this weekend.

There will be 11 services taking place across Sefton this Sunday (8th November 2026), with all welcome.

Tightened security will be introduced for parades at Southport, Bootle, Litherland and Waterloo in accordance with Martyn’s Law.

Martyn’s Law was created in tribute to Martyn Hett, one of the 22 victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena attack. It aims to ensure that publicly accessible premises and events are prepared to protect people in the event of any potential terrorist attack.

To ensure the safety of both parade participants and residents, Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) systems will be installed along each route.

While this will have no impact on the Remembrance Sunday services, the new security measures will mean traditional road closures in the area will be in place for longer periods.

These closures will now begin from 8am this Sunday, and roads are expected to be reopened by no later than 1pm on the same day.

All Veterans and Serving Personnel are welcome to join the annual service of Remembrance in Southport.

Anyone wishing to march in this year’s parade is requested to meet at the Armed Forces Community Hub on Wesley Street in Southport town centre, which will be open from 9.30am.

The Parade will march off from Wesley Street at 10.20am.

Any less able participants who wish to take part in the parade, can meet at the junction of Chapel Street and London Street at 10.40am to join with the last part of the march.

All Army and RAF Cadets will also march with their contingents from Wesley Street. Sea Cadets will join the parade at the end of Chapel Street. NB. This is a change from previous years in line with guidance from Merseyside Police.

If you are joining for Remembrance but not taking part in the parade, you are warmly welcomed to gather around the memorial in time for the service to start shortly after 10.45am.

Lest we forget.

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said:

“Due to these extended closure times there may be additional disruption on residential and business properties and we recommend making alternative arrangements regarding vehicle access and exit to affected properties.

“Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause.”
