Southport has been recognised as one of the happiest places to live in the North West.

The seaside town earned 11th place in the region in the annual Rightmove Happy at Home Index, which has been running for the past 14 years.

Southport was also judged to be the 88th happiest place in the UK.

Rightmove’s Happy at Home Index looks at what makes people feel content about where they live, and highlights the happiest places for 2025.

Thousands of residents across more than 200 locations shared what they love, or don’t love, about the place where they live, the friendliness of neighbours, job opportunities and access to green spaces.

The survey also looks at interesting findings, including the differences in happiness in rural, urban and suburban environments, as well as the way in which our sense of home happiness changes as we age.

Altrincham claimed top spot in the North West, with Blackpool 7th, Preston 9th and Liverpool 17th.

According to Rightmove, an area being genuinely happy can be based on several factors. A sense of belonging and wellbeing is one of the strongest drivers of happiness, which can be feeling welcomed by neighbours or living close to loved ones.

This year’s survey shows how important the environment can be for a town or a city.

Green spaces such as the Botanic Gardens, Hesketh Park and Victoria Park were shown to be one of the most valued features in the Index, offering places to relax, exercise, and connect with nature.
