An update on the work to transform Southport Market Quarter has been provided by Balfour Beatty and Sefton Council.
Balfour Beatty has been contracted by the local authority to improve the public space on the roads surrounding Southport Market under a scheme called ‘Les Transformations de Southport’.
The aim is to create accessible, well connected and high-quality public spaces, improving footfall between all areas of Southport town centre.
This will support local businesses in attracting and retaining customers, improve the health and wellbeing of communities and encourage people to stay longer or return more frequently.
Maisie O’Garra from Balfour Beatty has shared updates for local businesses and residents on how the work is going:
Eastbank Street upcoming works
The footpath works on Eastbank Street South have reached a stage where completing the next phase will require us to extend into the road. Before we can do this, we first need to complete work on the north side of Eastbank street (Chapel Street side) so that we can move the traffic over.
Work on the north footpath will continue. Pedestrians will be redirected to a path adjacent to the buildings.
The planned activities include the removal of existing kerbs and paving, installation of new paving, excavations for tree pits, and installation of new lighting columns.
Additionally, we will start paving across the Chapel Street and Sharrock Street entrances, coordinating with local stakeholders regarding deliveries to minimise disruption.

King Street upcoming works
The eastern footpath (Market side) is now 80% complete, and pedestrians have access on either side of King Street.
Construction on the road will continue, involving the excavation of the existing ground, stone placement, installation of new kerb lines, and surfacing of the road.
Furthermore, a new permeable paving and drainage system will be installed.
Soil will be added to the new rain gardens, which are low-level planting areas with shrubs and trees that also contain a drainage system beneath.
These installations will enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area.
Market Street upcoming works
The northern footpath (Market side) is 80% complete, and pedestrians now have access on both sides of Market Street with crossing points at the Southport Market entrance.
A base course of tarmac has been installed, forming part of the pavement foundation for the central pedestrianised section.
This tarmac allows emergency vehicles to traffic the final paved areas in the future and will remain exposed as a temporary haul road, eventually being paved over to complete the work.
Ongoing works include the removal of the existing paving and installation of new paving on the south footpath, along with the installation of new slot drains and connections. Please note that pedestrian walkways are subject to change as works progress; however, access will be maintained at all times, and any changes will be communicated directly to the affected businesses
