King Street Updates

We are pleased to provide an update on the ongoing works on King Street. Current progress on the Eastern Footpath (Market side): The footpath is 80% complete and pedestrian routes are currently available on both sides of the street.

Ongoing works for the carriageway construction include the Installation of new kerb lines, final trim of the carriageway foundation and Installation of surfacing to the carriageway.

Additional activities will include excavation and installation of a new permeable paving and drainage system, placement of soil in rain gardens and removal of existing lighting and installation of new columns.

Market Street upcoming works

Both sides of footpaths are now 90% complete on Market Street with works ongoing to the carriageway section.

We are pleased to announce that by the end of June, the majority of fencing to Market Street will be taken away leaving the new outdoor space for the shops and Southport Market.

We hope this will encourage people to use the outdoor space throughout the summer months although we will have to return to the area to carry out some remaining works and to install the planting during the planting season.

Update on Project Schedule and Phasing of Works

Our approach utilises phasing, which involves working on different areas of the project simultaneously. This method helps us complete the project more efficiently.

Phasing the works allows us to reduce the time we spend working in any particular area.

If we were to prioritise finishing some areas before starting others, the overall scheme would take much longer to complete, resulting in extended periods of disruption.

By managing multiple areas concurrently, we ensure that our presence and impact in any given location are kept to a minimum.

In line with our plans, we are excited to announce that Market Street will be fully pedestrianised.

The Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) necessary for the pedestrianisation of Market Street is progressing well. This initiative will provide a more pleasant and safer environment for pedestrians and contribute positively to the local community.

We understand that businesses on Market Street may have questions regarding loading and logistics. To address these concerns, we will be writing separately to businesses in the area to discuss alternative loading arrangements.

Our team is dedicated to finding solutions that mitigate any inconvenience and support local businesses during this transition. Your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated as we work towards enhancing the area for everyone.

We remain committed to keeping you updated on further developments and appreciate your patience during this period of improvement.
