Southport Football Club say they are “overwhelmed” after a kind-hearted good Samaritan made an “incredible donation” to help secure a defibrillator at the club.
The appeal was launched after the football world was horrified by seeing Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen collapse on the pitch from cardiac arrest during Saturday’s Euro 2020 match between Denmark and Finland.
The defibrillator will be installed outside the ground on Haig Avenue, and will be available for anyone to use by calling 999.
A Southport FC spokesperson said: “In light of the events we all witnessed at Euro 2020 in Copenhagen, the club are seeking donations to place a community use defibrillator on Haig Avenue.
“Although the Football Club has two AEDs, these travel with the teams at training and matches and are not always readily available in the community.
“This unit will be housed on the outside of the stadium on Haig Avenue and can be accessed by dialling 999.
“Thanks to an incredible donation from a long standing Southport supporter who wishes to remain anonymous we have reached our target.
“We are overwhelmed by this support and we can’t thank the person involved enough.
“A thank you to everyone who has donated via GoFundMe as well, we will be bringing pictures of the defibrillator on Haig Avenue as soon as it is in place. It should be with us by the end of the week.
“We of course hope we never have to use it but it will be there for the community to use should the need arise.”
