Southport FC 0 Kettering Town 0
Southport FC’s disappointing home record against Kettering continued on Saturday afternoon in a drab goalless draw with very few chances for both sides.
It was 1996 the last time that the Sandgrounders recorded a home win against The Poppies and rarely did they look like breaking the hoodoo yesterday.
Kettering had the better of the chances in the game, rattling the Southport woodwork on two occasions and when Southport did find themselves on the attack the very strong Kettering rearguard defended well.
Mason in the Kettering goal had very little to do but neither did Tony McMillan in the home goal. It was almost a replica of the game played at Latimer Park at the end of November which also ended scoreless.
Southport FC started very slowly and the visitors fired an early warning with a shot that came back off the bar in the 7th minute.
Niall Watson created Southport’s only real chance of the half but fired well wide.
The home side did look a bit more lively in the second period with Dylan Vassallo and Tyler Walton getting into good positions but unable to take advantage of the space and the attacks petered out into nothing.
There was a scare for The Sandgrounders on 76 minutes when the visitors once again struck the woodwork.
Southport’s half hearted appeals for a penalty were turned away late on and the home side were saved by a linesman’s flag as the visitors broke away which was a rather fortunate decision in Southport’s favour as the attacker appeared to have timed his run to perfection.
