Churches in Southport are showing their support for the people suffering during the war in Ukraine.

This tree outside the Church Of St Philip & St Paul With Wesley on Hampton Road is glowing with the colours of Ukraine’s blue and yellow.

It was decorated by pupils at St Philp’s Primary School, who are “praying for peace” in the war-torn country.

A St Philips Schools spokesperson said: “We pray for peace for all people as we hang prayer ribbons on our church tree.

“We pray for those suffering as a result of this awful invasion and we pray that the God of love and hope will win and change the hearts of those who are causing such harm. Amen.”

Christ Church, on Lord Street in Southport, is raising money for the people of Ukraine this Sunday (13th March).

They will also be setting aside every Sunday 6.30pm-7.30pm until Easter to pray for Ukraine.

Vicar of Christ Church in Southport, Rev Canon Steve McGanity, said: “As the situation in Ukraine worsens we are all wanting to do something to help in some small way.

“We are going to take an offering for Ukraine at our services this Sunday. We will give it to the TearFund Ukraine appeal.

“We are also going to take donations of items to be sent to Ukraine. We will be giving them to the International Aid Trust, based by Bamber Bridge, who are delivering supplies to Ukraine. “However, we will NOT be receiving clothing at the moment as the Trust is overwhelmed with clothing.

“If you are donating food please make sure that you follow the advice on the list about having at least a year before the best before date.

“Finally, we are setting aside every Sunday 6.30pm-7.30pm until Easter to pray for Ukraine. We had over 40 people last Sunday and it would be amazing to keep that kind of prayer momentum going at this vital time. We can make the biggest difference to this situation by praying. So please join us.”
