This festive season it is anticipated that food banks and shelters will need to care for an unprecedented amount of people who are struggling.

To help fill this need The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, on Preston New Road, Southport will be open this Saturday 12th December, between 2pm and 4pm, to be used as a donation site for locals who would like to assist.

The building will have a one way system in place.

All donations will be distributed to New Start Leyland Road, a charity which specialises in caring for local homeless youngsters.

They are especially in need of all toiletries, socks, gloves etc, hot drinks and any confectionary.

Sue Preece, who liaises between the Church and charities, said: “This festive season, because of the Covid restrictions, we are limited in our typical holiday service opportunities.

“We have, however,  found ways to be unified in other things, helping our local community is top of our list this Christmas.

“There are many people with pressing and specific needs this year.

“All donations will be gratefully received and we hope our neighbours, who are able to, will take the opportunity to use the Church building to drop off a little Christmas cheer for those less fortunate than themselves.”
