The historic Wayfarers Arcade in Southport has marked its 125h anniversary with a weekend of Victorian celebrations! 

Shoppers were treated to a fabulous two days of Victorian era entertainment from the Gambolling Arena Theatre Company and Wright’s Performing Arts. 

The weekend was packed with historic plays, dancing and singing, with performers young and old donned in Victorian attire.

Johnathan Plunkett led proceedings as the Master of Ceremonies while Father Christmas also put in an appearance to let people know of the festive events coming to Wayfarers Arcade this December. 

Gambolling Arena Director Suzy Walker said: “A big well done to our GA cast this weekend, who knocked it out of the park entertaining the crowds at Wayfarers Shopping Arcade. 

“I’d like to say a special thank you to: Johnathan Plunkett, Maria Marten and Wright’s Performing Arts for all their hard work!

Susan Taylor said: “I went on Saturday and the singers were really good.

“I’ve never seen the play Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber, I loved watching the performance they did. Well done everyone!”

Wayfarers Shopping Arcade, a stunning Grade II Listed landmark, opened on the Lord Street shopping boulevard in 1898.

The 125th birthday weekend was free to attend and featured a host of music hall singing and dancing, performers in Victorian costume, Victorian plays and more.

Families were able to browse local shops or sit down to enjoy a drink and something to eat from one of the arcade’s cafes.

Wayfarers Shopping Arcade is one of the North West’s most celebrated shopping arcades.

Open seven days a week, visitors can enjoy a variety of local independent businesses set on two floors.

Father Christmas loved the Victorian event so much he is going to be back with his grotto in Wayfarers Shopping Arcade this December every Saturday and Sunday leading up to Christmas Eve.
