Voting takes place for the Sefton Council local elections

Voters will go to the polls in Sefton this May in the first all-out local elections for over two decades.

It makes this the most crucial election for a long time, with every single one of Sefton’s 66 council seats up for grabs in a winner-takes-all contest.

Usually, a third of council seats are up for election at a time, with a ‘fallow’ year in the fourth year.

On Thursday 7th May 2026 voters will be able to decide the whole make-up of Sefton Council with a total of 310 candidates seeking your votes.

The full list of candidates has now been published by Sefton Council, with the list for the seven wards in Southport below.

The last time there was an all-out election locally was in June 2004. This was combined with European Parliament elections, and the result was no overall control.

Everyone voting will get three votes in your ward.

Each of the 22 electoral wards will elect 3 councillors.

The candidate who records the most votes will serve a 4-year term of office until May 2030. The candidate who records the second most number of votes will serve a 2-year term of office until May 2028.
