In a joyful gathering on the grounds of one of Lancashire’s most architecturally striking landmarks, Scarisbrick Hall School near Southport hosted its Summer Soirée, the final event in a year of commemorations marking 60 years since the school first opened its doors.

Designed by AWN Pugin, the same architect behind the Houses of Parliament, Scarisbrick Hall bears many features familiar to anyone who has walked the halls of Westminster.

For generations, it has stood not just as a local treasure, but as a place where families and their bold ideas have shaped a school rooted in values and community.

The event brought together past and present students, families, staff, and both the Oxley and Headley families, who have each played key roles in the school’s journey over the past six decades.

It was a moment to reflect, not only on the years gone by, but also on the courage to dream of something more.

In his welcome remarks, Headmaster Jeff Shaw spoke about staying true to the school’s founding principles while embracing the spirit of dreaming big. He said:

“Whether it was Charles Oxley setting out to create a school here in 1964, or Mike Headley’s determination to restore it years later – their actions remind us that lasting things often start with a bold step forward.”

There was also a warm welcome for former Deputy Headmaster John Sutton-Smith, a familiar face at the school for over 50 years. He charmed the audience with a light-hearted reflection, sharing how nursery students once asked if he had helped build Noah’s Ark – a nod to his long-standing presence and the generations he’s supported.

Raymond Pelekamoyo, who leads Development and Alumni Relations at the school, reflected on the meaning behind the day. He said:

“It’s heartening to see so many people come together, many travelling from abroad just to be part of this celebration. It says something about what this school has meant to families over time.

“While this marks the end of our 60th year events, we’re already looking ahead – including a busy year with The Open at Royal Birkdale, and perhaps a return visit from former student Tommy Fleetwood.”

Guests enjoyed a Bridgerton-themed afternoon set within the historic grounds, with a focus on nature, sustainability, and connection.

It was a setting that echoed both the past and the future. Among the school’s many former pupils are Nisha Katona MBE, founder of Mowgli Street Food, and Lord Dr Michael Hastings, Baron Hastings of Scarisbrick, CBE – both examples of the kind of quiet ambition and strong values the school has long encouraged.

As the afternoon came to a close, so too did a season of celebrations, a fitting tribute to a school shaped by the dreams of two families, and carried forward by a wider community that continues to believe in what’s possible.
