RSPCA Southport, Ormskirk & District

Local charity RSPCA Southport, Ormskirk & District has today been awarded a special grant from one of the UK’s leading animal welfare charities, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in London. The funds granted by Battersea will support RSPCA Southport, Ormskirk & District’s work with cats and dogs by upgrading its electricity supply.

Paul Gibson, Branch Manager said “Battersea has awarded us £3,500 to upgrade our electricity supply to our cattery, enabling the cats to keep warm in winter without blowing our main fuse!”

The cattery was built in 2015, but the contractor (now in liquidation) had not installed a 3-phase supply, leaving a situation where fuses would quite happily ‘pop’ if the heating was turned up too high during cold spells.

Paul Gibson said: “It always required careful management during those times, but Battersea came to our rescue and the problem is now sorted, thankfully.

“It is really good to see a bigger charity help a smaller one out, at its time of need – so it’s a great big Southport & Ormskirk thank you to our fellow welfare organisation in Battersea.”

Margaret Hulme, Grants Manager at Battersea said: “We hope that this grant will help make a real difference to the lives of animals. At Battersea we want to support rescues and shelters, not only by awarding funding, but also by sharing the experiences and knowledge we have gained as an animal welfare charity that has been rescuing and rehoming animals for 160 years.”

Battersea Grants is an initiative launched in 2019 that aims to support smaller rescues and shelters by offering grants of between £3,000 and £15,000. This money will help organisations continue their great work with dogs and cats.

RSPCA Southport, Ormskirk & District Branch rehomes about 350 animals a year, most of which come from cases of cruelty and neglect.

The Our Animal Centre, in New Cut Lane, on the Birkdale / Halsall border, covers Southport, Ormskirk and the surrounding areas as far south as Maghull. The Centre takes in, cares for, supports and helps rehabilitate cats and dogs that have been rescued from cruelty & neglect by the national RSPCA; whilst we find them new and forever homes.

Southport, Ormskirk & District Branch is a separately Registered Charity to the National RSPCA, which is completely reliant upon donations, legacies and monies raised through its Charity Shop, together with the public’s generous support of our locally run fundraising events. We aim to support the national RSPCA through our rehoming work and by promoting its animal welfare objectives.
