The Government today published which areas had the most new cases of coronavirus in England last week – allowing people to see how Sefton compares to other areas.
It follows the decision to place Leicester under a ‘local’ lockdown’ on Monday, at a time when businesses including restaurants, hotels, bars, cafes and hairdressers are preparing to reopen this Saturday (July 4).
Leicester was subjected to new restrictions after a spoke in cases which, according to Public Health England (PHE) figures published today, shows 141.3 positive cases per 100,000 people in the week ending June 28, slightly up from 140.2 in the week ending June 21.
Current figures in Sefton are 4.7 per 100,000, which equates to 3.3% of the Leicester total – a relief to local businesses reopening this weekend.
In nearby local authority areas, figures are (per 100,000): Knowsley 20.1, Manchester 17.5, Blackpool 13.6, Wirral 8.4, Liverpool 7.7, Lancashire 7.4, St. Helens 6.7.
People however are being reminded that the virus is still in circulation locally, with a range of safety measures to be found in newly-opening venues including social distancing signs, hand sanitiser stations, visors for staff, and requests to pay by contactless card.
Guidance remains for people to keep away from Southport’s beaches and to avoid using public transport if possible.
