Rebecca’s Jewellers in Southport is delighted to be back open again today after being targeted by a burglary gang on Monday night.
Local people have been thanked for all their kindness and support after the iconic store, at 319 Lord Street, was raided by a number of men on motorbikes at around 9pm.
A 43-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of burglary after officers stopped one of the offenders who fled the scene towards London Street.
The independent, family-run shop, which has been a firm favourite among customers in Southport since it opened in the 1970s, is now delighted to be back open and serving people again.
Rebecca’s Jewellers will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.
Manager Rob Taylor said: “We are all open and ready to welcome all our customers old and new!
“We would like to thank everyone for their kind words and messages, and also to Merseyside Police for a fantastic response and arrest.”
Part of Lord Street was closed on Tuesday while Merseyside Police officers investigated the incident. The Atkinson and Southport Town Hall were also closed on Tuesday while detectives carried out their work.
A Southport Neighbourhood Team spokesperson said: “We would like to thank residents and visitors to Southport on Tuesday for their cooperation while the road closures were in place on Lord Street, following the burglary at a Lord Street jewellers. We understand how much disruption and inconvenience this caused, but the expansive crime scene was necessary to allow a prompt and effective investigation to take place.
“Neighbourhood Officers based at Southport Police Station, on patrol in town, were first on the scene of the burglary on Monday night and were responsible for the arrest of one of the suspects.
“Following the opening up of Lord Street, Southport Neighbourhood Officers arrested a 44 year old man on Lord Street for breach of a sex offender order. At custody the man was found in possession of a stolen mobile phone, so he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of theft of the phone as well.
“Shortly after this, Southport Neighbourhood officers arrested a 32 year old man on Cable Street, wanted on suspicion of burglary and theft of a town centre shop.
“These arrests were possible because we have a dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team based at Southport Police Station, with strong local knowledge of the area and of local offenders, and who don’t work 9-5, as some would have you believe.
“Please help us dispel the myths that “Southport Police Station is closed” or that “All police in Southport come from Liverpool”.
“Thank you again for your cooperation and understanding today.”
