Southport Aiw Show. The RAF Red Arrows

The RAF Red Arrows wowed thousands of visitors during two days of the 2024 Southport Air Show.

Families on Southport Beach were mesmerised by sensational displays on both days, as the Red Arrows celebrated their 60th anniversary in style.

The nine-aircraft display team marked their diamond season with a return of their most iconic shape, the Diamond Nine.

People enjoyed more excellent displays by a host of other aircraft from a range of eras including the Typhoon, Tutor, Black Cats Display, Spitfire, P-51 Mustang, wingwalkers, Starlings, Vampire, Blenheim, Strikemaster Solo, Catalina, Swordfish and Wasp.

The popular annual event was first held in 1991 and brings in an estimated £1.5m to the Southport economy.

There was lots to enjoy on the ground too including static aircraft and military vehicles.

Marine Drive was lined with a producers market and stalls selling an array of goods ranging from clothes to sweets.

There were flight simulators, children’s attractions, a paintball range, bouncy castles and a hook-a-duck game.

Those attending were able to learn about school life in 1940 with a period headmistress / master from Historical Promotions.

The Mid Lancs Military Vehicle Trust members brought along a display of their vehicles which they have lovingly restored.

The Lytham St Annes Spitfire Ground Display Team and Spitfire ‘Lucy’ was on the ground, giving visitors the opportunity to sit in the cockpit.

The 69th Field Artillery Guns brought lots of noise on the beach, firing at various times each day.

Speaking on Stand Up For Southport, Terence Shear said: “This was our first visit to an air show and I have to say it was absolutely amazing.

“Don’t know about the parking etc last year but this year for us at least it was seamless, easy to follow signs, loads of parking spaces and we had no trouble leaving.

“The show itself was fantastic and of course the highlight was the Red Arrows who I never thought I would get to see live. The only slight drawback was the beach which was pretty dire.”
