Pontins holiday park in Ainsdale in Southport

Britannia has expressed its ‘great sadness’ over the sudden closure of Pontins holiday park in Southport today.

Employees at the park, next to Ainsdale Beach. are believed to have been told the shock news today.

The attraction is owned by Britannia, which also owns three hotels in Southport; the Prince of Wales, the Scarisbrick Hotel and the Royal Clifton.

A statement from Britannia said: It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of Pontins Southport Holiday Park.

“After assessing the future viability of the park, we have come to the difficult decision to close our doors.

“Unfortunately, this means that Pontins Southport Holiday Park will be closing from Wednesday 3rd January 2024.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The news follows the closure of Prestatyn and Camber Sands in November.

No bookings are being accepted on the site.

On its website, Pontins says: “Southport is famous for its award winning beaches and rolling sand dunes!

“Pontins Southport Holiday Park is a great resort to visit, with great facilities for the whole family. We have star cabarets, bluecoat shows, game shows, entertainment and Pontins leisure activities such as Bouncy Castle Centre, we also have a fully heated indoor swimming pool with a separate area for the youngest, Go Karts and much more….”.

In November, hundreds of holidaymakers were left with nowhere to go after two Pontins holiday parks were shut with immediate effect.

The other remaining Pontins resorts are at Pakefield, Suffolk; and Weston-super-Mare.
