An iconic former card shop on Lord Street in Southport which served customers for over 60 years could soon become home to a new micropub.
A planning application has been submitted to Sefton Council to convert the former Plaza Cards at 118 Lord Street in Southport town centre into a new use.
It would involve the installation of a disabled toilet cubicle including a door, washbasin and w.c., the installation of bar counter, plus the removal and replacement of exterior Perspex signage to front.
The proposed opening hours are between midnight and 11pm Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 10pm on Sundays and bank holidays.
A planning statement says: “The application site is in a quiet position, on a secondary road just off the main Lord Street thoroughfare, and near to the Grade II* Listed London Square ensemble, which includes the War Memorial Obelisk, the northeast and southwest colonnades, the pools of remembrance, memorial garden walls, and cast iron lamp standards.
“The property itself is not Listed, nor a Non-Designated Heritage Asset and has a large double height shop glazing frontage, which will be unchanged by the proposal.
“The fascia sign above the unit will be changed for a new design but will be of the same scale and positioning and would not dominate, nor have an unacceptable impact upon amenity or result in any harm to the nearby heritage assets, Listed buildings, nor the Lord St Conservation Area.
“In summary, the proposed change of use application would not result in an unacceptable impact upon, nor result in any detrimental harm to, the character or the conservation area and will comply with planning policy.”
Plaza Cards in Southport closed its doors for the last time on Saturday 20th January 2024 after more than 60 years trading.
Owner Chris Newell thanked “all our wonderful customers” who have supported the shop over the past six decades.
