Paddle boarders will wear the blue and yellow of Ukraine as they stage a Paddle For Peace event in Southport this weekend.

SUP North is inviting people to come along to the event, at the northern end of the Marine Lake in Southport, between 3pm and 5pm this Sunday (6th March 2022).

People are being asked to come along and watch the spectacle while donating what they can to the Disasters and Emergency Committee here: https://www.dec.org.uk/appeal/ukraine-humanitarian-appeal

Other paddle boarders around the UK will be staging similar events this weekend, with the hope that this fundraising event will spread around the globe.

People are being asked to share awareness of the event by posting pictures and videos on social media – please post any into our Stand Up For Southport Facebook group! – with the hashtags #paddleforpeace and #standupforukraine

SUP North is well known locally for staging events such as the Santa SUP, which saw paddle boarders take to the Marine Lake in their Father Christmas outfits and other festive costumes at the same time as the Queenscourt Hospice Santa Sprint was taking place.

SUP North organiser Alan Taylor said: “This Sunday we invite you to paddle out and stand up with fellow paddlers in support of the people of Ukraine.

“We will be on the water at the North end of The Marine lake at 3.30pm.

“If you do not have a board please come to support from the sides as we Stand Up For Ukraine in a Paddle For Peace event.

“Let’s get outdoors, clear some thoughts and show solidarity with those experiencing unthinkable events.

“If you can, please donate to the Disasters and Emergency Committee who work with 15 charities and will support the millions of people fleeing their homes for safety. https://www.dec.org.uk/appeal/ukraine-humanitarian-appeal

“We encourage you to wear blue and yellow to represent the Ukrainian flag.

“If Southport is too far, please do hold your own Paddle for Peace and stand up on your home water with local paddlers.

“Please tag your posts with #paddleforpeace and #standupforukraine

“I have quite a few other paddle board groups around the UK organising their own paddle for peace events. I am hoping like Santa SUP it may spread around the globe.

“SUP Friends in Scotland, Tamworth have organised events for this weekend and others in Liverpool and Bristol are planning for events to take place soon.
