The Southport African Caribbean Heritage Association (SACHA) hosted a fantastic Windrush76 event on Saturday (22nd June 2024) to commemorate Windrush Day.

It was a day filled with rich cultural experiences, inspiring speeches, and a strong sense of community.

SACHA co-founder and Southport Windrush event organiser Gemma Collins said: “SACHA’s mission is to empower our community, celebrate our heritage, and build a lasting sense of belonging.

“We heard about the incredible contributions of the Windrush generation, who arrived in 1948 and played a pivotal role in British history.

“Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating Windrush Day!

“Let’s continue to honour the legacy of the Windrush generation and the rising of the Windrush Flag.

“We look forward to seeing you at future SACHA events!

“The day ended with a powerful message: even if you don’t know your heritage, you belong.

“Connection comes in many forms, and SACHA is here to foster a sense of community and belonging for everyone.”

People across the community were invited to celebrate the 76th Windrush anniversary with a special event in Southport town centre.

Organised by the Southport African Caribbean Heritage Association, Saturday saw a day of ‘vibrant culture and contributions’.

The group started at Southport Town Hall at 10am to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Windrush generation by holding a short ceremony.

The Windrush flag was raised as a mark of respect the night before on Friday, 21st June.

People then made their way to Southport Bijou Cinema to watch Floella Benjamin’s film ‘Coming to England’.

First a book, the film is based on a true story about Baroness Floella Benjamin who travelled from Trinidad to London as part of the Windrush generation.

Nanny Pearl’s, a Caribbean Street Food vendor, was at the event providing authentic Caribbean food. They appeared at the Southport Food and Drink Festival during the Bank Holiday weekend.
