The Christmas season in Southport has officially begun after a packed day of festive entertainment.

The fun included the Southport Christmas Spectacular in the Town Hall Gardens, organised by Southport BID; the Christmas Lights Switch On at The Grand; the festive Artisan Market on the newly pedestrianised Market Street; Christmas shows inside The Atkinson; festive entertainment inside Southport Market, and more.

Families from across the region came together to enjoy a day of music, performances, games, and a visit from Santa himself!

It was filled with something for everyone to enjoy.

The Big Onion, based inside the former Crave pizza café in the Town Hall Gardens on Lord Street, opened its doors to the local community for the first time for a special Christmas Market.

The building had a variation of stalls selling mulled wine, hot chocolate and art and décor made by local creative businesses.

Emmy Oranges, the founder of Art Ease CIC and a Southport-based illustrator, held her first stall of the festive season and spoke about her experience setting up shop in the Big Onion.

“A lot of people have been coming in and asking about the events, people come to show their support for the businesses that have set up here, like myself.

“I’ve made lots of sales and chatted to local people about what will be happening over the next few months.”

She continued and spoke about the importance of these events in Southport.

“It’s a way to bring people together, it’s nice to have a place where people can chat, be themselves, get together and be around different people.”

In the Town Hall Gardens, there was festive music being played, a face painting stall, a walk-in inflatable snow globe and of course the Christmas lights. You can walk through the sparkling Christmas tree, look up and watch as the lights change and swirl.

The lights will be up for the duration of the Christmas season, so make sure to check them out.
