The demolition of the former Southport Theatre and Convention Centre is nearly complete.
Work will then be able to begin on creating the £73 million new Marine Lake Events Centre (MLEC).
Once complete, the facility, which is led by Sefton Council, is estimated to attract 515,000 additional visitors per year and generate an additional £18 million for the local economy.
Some final enabling works are now taking place at the site with final site levels to be finalised.
A Sefton Council report said: “DSM the contractor is anticipated to complete their work by April 2025.
“The main contractor procurement is now completed and Graham Construction now appointed for preconstruction services for the main contract once demolition and enabling works have been completed by DSM.”
The new MLEC is among a range of ambitious projects which are being supported through Southport Town Deal and form part of the Southport Town Deal programme for generating economic growth.
The main contractor for the construction of the new centre is in the process of being officially appointed.
The new MLEC will be accompanied by a ‘Light Fantastic’ water and light attraction in the Marine Lake, the only one of its kind in the UK.
The scheme is being funded through £33.3 million in Southport Town Deal funding; £20 million through the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority; and £19.9 million in prudential borrowing by Sefton Council.
Prior to the demolition, a number of historical heritage items were removed from the former Southport Theatre site.
They are now being held in safe storage and will be incorporated into the future MLEC site for public viewing.
