The newest branch of the Classical Association has opened in Southport.
The committee who are all state school teachers of Classics and Ancient History are looking forward to bringing a love for the ancient world to the general public.
From October 2022, the association will be putting on a series of lectures in the theatre at King George V Sixth Form College in Southport and have secured a line up of leading academics, authors and media personalities in the field of Classics to visit the town over the coming months.
Honorary President Jasmine Elmer says she is “delighted” to be a part of the new venture. Jasmine is the star of the podcast “Legit Classics” which is produced by Hat Trick Productions and she has recently appeared on “The Lost Treasures of Ancient Rome” by National Geographic and BBC4.
She will be opening the programme on October 5th with a Greek mythology themed lecture based around the mythical creatures of Ancient Greece and their deeper significance.
Chairperson of the Southport and Birkdale Classical Association, Francesca Grilli said:
“We have tried to plan an inaugural programme that taps into various different interest areas for our members; from mythology to Roman military history and even some Greek philosophy. We are particularly excited about the visit from Professor Edith Hall in April since she has recently been made a Fellow of the British Academy and is always in such high demand!”
Membership to the Association costs just £12 a year or £5 for students and will entitle members to attend all 6 lectures.
Non-members are welcome to turn up on the night for the cost of £5 per lecture and the association will advertise free spaces via social media in the weeks before the event.
You can follow them on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook via the handle @sandbclassics and if you are interested in becoming a member, please complete the following membership form https://forms.gle/DvjFWvNsvTvyMwm19 or email the committee at sandbclassics@gmail.com

The Southport and Birkdale Classical Association would like to thank the Principal at King George V Sixth Form College, Michelle Brabner, for allowing them to use their facilities to launch this community venture and also to the national Classical Association for their ongoing support.
