A brand new micropub in Southport town centre is sounding the charge towards its opening date.
Work is taking place to convert the former Plaza Cards unit at 18 Lord Street into The Bugle Tap after planning permission was granted in November.
The new venue aims to offer “a laid back atmosphere with bodega and bierkeller vibes”.
Owners David and Vicky Brown, who previously ran The Masons Arms pub nearby, are bringing a vibrant new business into a unit that has been empty for two years.
It adds to a real resurgence on Lord Street, with several new businesses opening their doors in recent months.
David and Vicky Brown said:
“We’re almost there!
“We hope to be opening in a couple of weeks, all being well.
“The beer pumps are being installed this week.
“There are a few small jobs to be done then we can add the finishing touches.
“From next week, most importantly, we’ll be getting the beer delivered!

“We’ve not been putting many photos on our social media pages recently as we don’t want to give away too much before our big reveal!
“We recently unwrapped our eagerly-awaited bier font.
“We’re happy to announce that we will be the exclusive permanent outlet in Southport of Tegernseer Hell.
“It is brewed by Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus Tegernsee, one of Bavaria’s oldest breweries with roots tracing back to the 17th century.
“Nestled on the shores of Lake Tegernsee, the brewery has become a cornerstone of Bavarian beer culture, producing lagers that embody tradition, quality and regional pride.”
David and Vicky said they want The Bugle Tap to become known as “a warm and welcoming space which we hope will be appreciated by the discerning drinker looking for something a bit different from the usual mainstream offering.
“Rest assured we’re working hard behind the scenes sourcing products and are looking forward to The Bugle Tap being a great asset to Southport.”
The Bugle Tap will sell the finest cask and craft ales, German and Belgian beers, small batch spirits and single malts, and will be dog friendly.
The owners ran the Masons Arms for almost five years until September 2024.
They took the Masons from a failing pub and transformed it into one of the busiest and best in Southport.
The pub earned a place in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for three consecutive years and earned a CAMRA award for the quality of its eer.
They said: “We love Southport and are keen to support the town by making a considerable investment in its future.”
Plaza Cards in Southport closed its doors for the last time on Saturday 20th January 2024 after more than 60 years trading.
David and Vicky are now eager to revitalise this empty building and bring new life to it, adding another new local independent business to Lord Street.
The proposed opening hours are between midnight and 11pm Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 10pm on Sundays and bank holidays.
