A community organisation which founded a coffee shop in Southport to provide training employment opportunities for people who may be struggling with confidence, mental health or neurodiversity has won the Sefton Business In The Community Of The Year Award sponsored by In Demand Radio.
Maz Langshaw and her team from My Mind Matters CIC, who run The Old Bakehouse coffee shop on the corner of Zetland Street and Manchester Road in Southport, won their accolade at the 2026 Grand Pride Of Sefton Awards at The Grand in Southport.
They were presented with their trophy by Mayor of Sefton Cllr June Burns, on a glittering night which honoured local heroes from across the borough across 13 categories.
Maz Langshaw, founder of My Mind Matters CIC, said:
“Most organisations only take on volunteers who already have confidence, experience, or stability. We do the opposite.
“The Old Bakehouse coffee shop opens doors to people who are rebuilding confidence, navigating mental health or neurodiversity, need structure, purpose, or a gentle re‑entry into community life.
“We provide the opportunity our volunteers have never been given a chance elsewhere.
“By developing the person, not just the role! In the 12 months since opening, Four volunteers have entered into paid employment and are thriving. To say I am very proud is an understatement.
“Our volunteers aren’t just helpers.
“They are Ambassadors of our values, co‑creators of our atmosphere and proof that when given safety and trust, they flourish.
“This year, we are deepening our commitment to inclusion by investing in formal training and development for our volunteers.
“This isn’t common in small community businesses, thus further highlighting how we view our volunteers not as ‘extra hands’. We value their personal growth, confidence and long-term wellbeing.”
The Old Bakehouse offers a space where visitors are encouraged not to rush. Where people are welcome to pop in for a chat where they’ll always find a friendly face.
The venue offers home cooked breakfast, brunch and lunch, along with coffee, cakes and pastries.
Owner Maz Langshaw had a career in banking but for the past 20 years has been determined to open her own coffee shop and combine it with a community hub with a purpose.
The 2026 Grand Pride Of Sefton Awards celebrated selfless, talented and courageous people across 13 categories at The Grand in Southport on Friday night (24th April 2026).
The Main Award was won by Queenscourt Hospice founder Dr Karen Groves MBE.
The evening was hosted by former Sky Sports News presenter Fraser Dainton with VIP guests including HM Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside Peter Oliver OBE and Mayor of Sefton Cllr Burns.
Funds were raised on the night for the ICU Steps charity, which supports patients in intensive care and their families.
The Grand Pride Of Sefton Awards are organised by Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group and Stand Up For Southport in association with media partners In Demand Radio with support from Southport BID.
There are 13 categories including Child of Courage, School Of The Year, Community Impact, Charity Champion and more, plus the Main Award.
Next year’s event takes place on Friday the 30th April 2027.
