May-Lean & Co Limited is producing thousands of top quality, virus-resistant face masks to keep people safe against Coronavirus

A renowned North West business is busy making thousands of top quality, virus-resistant face masks to keep people safe against Coronavirus.

May-Lean & Co Limited is producing face coverings which are washable and reusable. The fabric contains a nano technology with an anti-microbial coating which reacts with any microbes (viruses, fungi and bacteria) and destroys them on impact. They have been tested by an accredited microbiological laboratory.

The soft furnishing specialists employ dozens of local people at their factory on Linacre Road in Litherland and supply a number of high end companies across the UK.

Since the Coronavirus outbreak in March they have turned some of their attention to making top quality face masks to play their part in their war against Covid-19.

The masks are much more effective at keeping people safe, they are more environmentally friendly than disposable masks and are made by a British company.

May-Lean & Co Limited Director Lindsay Tully said: “We are doing this to help to get Britain back to work.

“We felt it was important for a local company to start making face masks, so that they are made here in the UK and not imported from China or somewhere else overseas, which is much better for the environment.

“We are a North West firm wanting to help other businesses, schools and organisations to get back to work.

“The masks are high-spec, and are washable as well. They are really good quality and have got good coverage for people’s faces. Everyone who has bought them from us has told us they are really pleased with them. They are quite lightweight and comfortable to wear.

“You see people walking around shops or travelling to work and they have got paper masks on, which don’t give the wearer as much protection, as well as being bad for the environment.

“We are in talks with one large fast food firm which is looking to change suppliers after their employees said that the masks they were wearing made their faces sweat and they were really uncomfortable to wear.

“It is important for people to get masks which are anti-microbial as well as feeling comfortable.

“We are supplying masks for everyone, from local families up to large orders of 100,000+ units.

“We are in talks with a number of PPE companies which are keen to place large orders with us.”

May-Lean & Co Limited is producing a number of designs including: plain cream, charcoal, Union Jack, ditzy design or NHS rainbow colours. They can create other designs too.

Lindsay said: “If a large firm or a school requests a particular design then we can produce masks that are tailor-made for their requirements, for 500 units or more.

“I have sent packs out to schools offering our services, and to local universities as well.”

May-Lean & Co Limited & Co has operated in Litherland for over 45 years. Lindsay has worked there for the past 24 years.

She said: “We have got 30 staff working here. People tend to stay with us for a long time.

“We are a soft furnishing company, supplying large high-end firms across the UK including Soho House, Andrew Martin International and Coach House, the UK’s largest trade only furniture and giftware supplier. We also export goods to the US.

“Our factory closed in March but we took on some voluntary work, helping to make scrubs for Aintree University Hospital, Southport Hospital and others, to help them cope during the Coronavirus crisis.

“As a local company in the UK we want to do what we can to help our NHS and others locally.”
