The new McDonald's unit surrounded by gates and vans

McDonald’s plans to add an 8m tall totem sign to its plans for a new restaurant at Central 12.

Work is ongoing to transform the former Royal Doulton unit into the town’s third McDonald’s site, adding to existing ones in Kew and at Ocean Plaza. The unit is located next to Costa Coffee and has sat empty for 15 years.

The fast food giant won permission to convert the vacant shop to its new use after drawing back from plans to operate 24 hours a day in response to feedback from neighbours. With the opening date fast approaching, a new planning application has gone in seeking permission to erect the totem sign featuring the Golden Arches logo.

Drawings of the proposal show the sign also includes the 6am-11pm opening time and describes it as a “drive to” facility. If Sefton Council approves the application, the totem will be installed at the main entrance to the car park next to the sign which lists the available shops.

A report submitted with the application states: “The proposed totem signage is appropriate in this location and will have no adverse impact on visual amenity or the character of the area, nor would it be harmful to public safety.”
