The Mayor of Sefton has praised a “very talented” local fashion designer who has created beautiful vintage fashion from every decade going back to the 1890s.
Cllr Clare Carragher was invited to officially open the special exhibition at Wayfarers Arcade on Lord Street in Southport.
The exhibits were created by fashion designed Mark Lyon Taylor, who works in The Hair Lounge on the first floor balcony at Wayfarers Arcade.
The exhibition is among events taking place to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the famous landmark, originally known as Leyland Arcade.
The stunning and exclusive collection of dresses replicating fashion through the decades has taken Mark more than a year to make.
Cllr Clare Carragher said: “I do truly love my job! Where else would you get to open a fashion exhibition through the ages than in Southport?
“All these beautiful gowns were made by the very talented Mark Lyon Taylor, to celebrate 125 years of Wayfarers Arcade.
“Mark had made a dress for each decade the arcade has been there.
“His attention to detail in his creations is second to none.
“He told me he even made a replica underslip for the 1950s dress, boned the corsets, hand sewed all the beads and applique, and used replica fabric and original vintage fabric and lace where he could find it.
“This young man truly is very gifted and talented and is looking to be a costume designer as a career.
“His exhibition runs till 23rd April and is well worth a visit.
“Congratulations Mark, you are awesome.”
Starting in 1898, the year Wayfarers Shopping Arcade opened, the exhibition illustrates the changing face of each decade of fashion right up to the present day. It also illustrates how fashion replicates history and is a not to be missed event.
Many hundreds of people flocked to see the last fashion exhibition in Wayfarers when Mark exhibited a stunning, exact replica of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress that he had made, taking him many months.
Historical fashion exhibitions held in the past within Wayfarers have proved very popular with people from far and wide visiting, often more than once.
The exhibition runs until Sunday 23th April 2023 and is free to enter.
