Amelia (Millie) Whyte has raised over £700 to improve the Botanic Gardens in Churchtown in Southport by asking people to make donations instead of gifts as she celebrated her 90th birthday

A kind-hearted Southport lady has celebrated her 90th birthday by asking family and friends not to buy her birthday presents – but to donate money to improving the Botanic Gardens in Churchtown instead.

Amelia Whyte, ‘Millie’ to those close to her, celebrated her milestone at Southport Football Club.

In lieu of gifts, she asked her nearest and dearest to donate to the Make a Change for Botanic appeal. She even donated £100 to her own birthday appeal herself!

Sammi Rudge from the Make A Change For Botanic group said: “We would like to say a big thank you to a very special lady, celebrating a very special birthday, who has given us a very special gift!

“So far a whopping £1,300 has been donated and we’re delighted to reveal that we have arranged for some of the funds to go towards a wheelchair accessible picnic table to be sited within the park.

“The table will be completed for the summer season and will carry a plaque to acknowledge the generosity of Millie and her family.”

Her daughter Linsey Saunders said: “Mum told us that she didn’t want any birthday presents, she had everything she needed.

“She told us that, instead, she would rather people make donations to help improve the Botanic Gardens in Churchtown.

“It is a real landmark in Southport where people can see what difference the money they are donating is making, for everyone who goes to enjoy the park.

“In the past couple of months we have had to get a wheelchair for Mum to help her to get around.

“I think it is a really nice idea to use funds towards a disability friendly picnic table in the Botanic Gardens.

“Mum has lost her eyesight but she loves to sit back in the park and hear all the sounds, she loves listening to all the birds, she loves listening to all the ducks and the swans on the lake.

“Mum was born and grew up in Southport. She has many, many fond memories of when she was a youngster in Southport, she has always loved visiting the Botanic Gardens, it has always been a really special place for her.

“Mum is made up with the amount of people who have already donated to the appeal to improve the Botanic Gardens.

“Let’s hope a lot more people also donate so the improvements to the park can keep being made and so that the lake can finally be sorted out.

“We really enjoyed the Botanic Gardens Fun Day that was held last year, it was a brilliant day. It was so busy! I have never seen the park so full.

“If we can encourage more people to donate, that would be brilliant.”
