Southport musician Marc Almond OBE has expressed his feelings of “sadness and shock” after the tragedy at Hart Street on Monday in which three young girls died and several others were injured in a shocking knife attack.

And he praised how “Southport came together as a community because Southport is like that” in the aftermath of the atrocity, and the riot that took place the following night.

Marc is lauded worldwide for his successful solo career and his years with Soft Cell, selling over 30 million records worldwide.

Marc Almond OBE said: “I want to reiterate my feelings of sadness and shock that have deepened as the news unfolded on Monday.

“The grief is unimaginable from the families who lost loved ones and those still recovering.

“Southport came together as a community because Southport is like that, a friendly warm place where many people know each other and love the town.

“Every time I visit Southport to see family who still live there, I’m reminded of what a special place it is.

“There are other pretty seaside towns and maybe I’m biassed being a ‘Sandgrounder’,  but there’s nowhere quite like it.

“This senseless and shocking tragedy has not fully played out yet but Southport, though scarred, will recover.

“This tragedy mustn’t be hijacked by mindless thugs and morons and the focus must be on those that have lost loved ones, grieving families and good people who have shown good Northern warmth and caring spirit.

“That’s the real Southport.”
