Slimming World groups across Merseyside proudly opened their doors this weekend to welcome two key local leaders — Councillor Lynne Thompson and Patrick Hurley, MP for Southport.
Both were invited to attend Kelly’s Slimming World groups to experience, first-hand, the difference that community-based weight-loss support makes in people’s lives.
The visits shone a light on the unique role these groups play in tackling obesity and improving health locally. In just 40 minutes, both leaders were able to see how a group supports members through open and honest conversation — not only about what they eat, but also how they think and feel about food.
Far from being a “diet,” Slimming World helps members build life-long strategies around shopping, cooking, eating and socialising — creating sustainable lifestyle changes that go far beyond the scales.
Kelly, who leads both groups, said:
“It was such an honour to welcome Councillor Thompson and Patrick Hurley MP. Our members were proud to show the support, motivation and friendship that’s at the heart of Slimming World, and why our groups are so much more than a place to get weighed.”

Slimming World’s District Manager for Merseyside, Fiona Foulder, was also there to support Kelly and her members. She explained how these groups are rooted in the heart of the community — offering a safe, supportive space where people come together, week after week, to change their lives for the better.
Fiona added that Slimming World has invited numerous councillors to attend groups across Merseyside, and while Lin Thompson and Patrick Hurley took the opportunity this weekend, other local leaders are warmly welcomed to come along too. The aim is to show, first-hand, the vital role these community groups play in supporting the health and wellbeing of residents right across the region.
