Local bands will rock the evening session at Southport Calling this May!
Southport Calling, organised by Southport BID, is among many Eurovision themed events that people can experience over the coming days.
It will take place in and around the Bandstand on Lord Street in Southport town centre on Saturday 13th May 2023 .
People can enjoy Family Fun between midday and 2pm, the Sing For Southport contest between 2pm and 4pm and then Live Music between 4pm and 8pm.
Hosts for the day will be Sandgrounder Radio.
Southport BID CEO Rachel Fitzgerald said: “Southport Calling is a free event to celebrate Eurovision and local talent.
“It is the perfect chance to enjoy some superb musical talent in Southport town centre before heading off to watch the Eurovision Song Contest final in town, or if you are attending one of the many Eurovision events in Southport.
“The evening sessions will be preceded by Family Fun and the Sing For Southport contest, with lots for people of all ages to enjoy.
“We are all looking forward to the Eurovision Song Contest coming to Liverpool in May and Southport is excited to be joining in the party!”
The Southport Strings Ensemble will be playing at 4pm before the bands begin.
Bands playing at Southport Calling on Saturday 13th May include:
Coopers Bar House Jazz Band (5pm)
Cooper Bar House Jazz Band
Cooper House Jazz Band are a jazz quintet based out of Coopers Bar on Leicester Street. They will be performing a variety of jazz standards featuring Ella Cooper on vocals.
The Kowloons (5.50pm)
A 4-piece Indie pop band with members from Southport and Kirkby. Fronted by twin brothers with a passion for crafting catchy, melodic songs reminiscent of the BritPop era.
ConeHeads (6.40pm)
Cone Heads
The Coneheads are a pop-rock band who grew up together in Southport. They formed the band in Year 9, playing til’ their little fingers got sore, and eventually finding the rhythm to get through a whole song. Now in the last year of college, they play gigs in and around Merseyside.
Frank Flight Band (7.30pm)
The Frank Flight Band are from North West England, an as yet obscure psychedelic / progressive rock band.
They have received great reviews for their music including being voted No 9 in the Best Albums of the Year a couple of years ago in the New York Music Daily for their album Remains.
Before the live bands at Southport Calling, visitors can enjoy:
Family Fun 12pm – 2pm
Birkdale Orpheus Society Musical Theatre Company will perform a take on their upcoming show, Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat.
Song and dance from Holy Trinity Primary School and Choir
Dance routines from Express Performing Arts, DBA School of Dance, and Magic Movers.
The Atkinson Wellbeing Choir will sing a repertoire of Eurovision hits and classics.
Sing For Southport 2pm – 4pm
The Sing For Southport finals will showcase some of the best local, vocal talent. Each singer will perform their chosen song before the audience and judges will vote to decide the overall winner.
Students from Central Dance Studios will also perform dance numbers throughout.
Southport BID is delighted to welcome Compassion Acts as official charity partners of Southport Calling.
There will be opportunities to donate and show your support for the fantastic work they do in supporting Ukrainian refugees.
Eurovision themed events will take place across Southport this May, at venues including: Bijou Cinema, Southport Market, The Grand, Bold Hotel, The Atkinson, Southport Pleasureland, The Windmill, Southport Coaster, and more.
