This Christmas Southport BID and IllumiDex UK Ltd are inviting young people to help decorate Southport through the brand new Illustrate Illuminate competition and trail.
llustrate Illuminate is an artwork competition where the BID asks you to design a festive-themed icon.
A select number of these will then be adapted in lighting motifs that will be displayed across Southport town centre over the holiday period.
The lights will form the first Illustrate Illuminate trail, which will encourage people to find each artwork in a different location across the town. The decorations will also feature the name and more detail on the winning artist.

Southport BID CEO Rachel Fitzgerald said:
“Southport has a growing reputation for vibrant lighting displays and illuminations; no more so than during the festive period.
“Illustrate Illuminate will be a fantastic addition to the town centre this Christmas, and most importantly, will give the young people of Southport an opportunity to be an active influence on the town.
“We can’t wait to see the artworks that are submitted.”
IllumiDex UK Ltd Director Steve Clayton said:
“Southport BID approached us about the idea of children designing some custom-made Christmas decorations for the town, and we were delighted to take part.
“Every year we install the illuminated Christmas tree and the Christmas decorations throughout Southport town centre, and we also installed 300,000 lights along the entire length of Lord Street. Southport is a magical place to be at Christmas with all the decorations, and everything lit up.
“We are really looking forward to seeing the designs that the children come up with in this competition!
“When we have created and installed their custom-made Christmas decorations in Southport, it will be great for them to be able to point them out to their family and their friends and say ‘I designed that!’”
- Young people aged up to 16 can enter
- Artworks can be based on any festive theme
- Artworks must have a strong outline, and do not necessarily need colour
- Complex drawings and multiple icons may not be suitable and artwork that will be easier to adapt is preferred
- The Atkinson Library is open Monday-Friday 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-2pm.
