A pub licensee who has successfully transformed a landmark Southport pub is saying farewell after three and a half years at the helm.
Steve Richards has brought in a series of huge improvements at The Southport Tavern, previously known as The Albert, on London Road, to the side of Southport Train Station.
Steve took over the pub in the summer of 2023 with a determination to completely change the venue’s identity and reputation.
He has given the historic pub a fresh new look; brought back real ale; championed live music; introduced live sport; and hosted a series of popular community events, including their famous Mega Bingo sessions on Sunday afternoons.
Steve Richards said:
“After three and a half years, I’m passing the baton at The NEW Southport Tavern. I feel the time is right to move on, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together, turning a poorly run site into a proper pub.
“The company taking over is a great operator. They’ll build on the progress we’ve made with similar events.
“Our last day is Monday (26th October 2026) with the new company taking charge on Tuesday.

“I’m having a leaving bash this Sunday from 7pm, after the bingo, for friends and regulars. It would be great to see some of you there.
“Mega Bingo will take place this Sunday at 5pm as usual! Wayne Stanley will be live on stage after the bingo to send off in style!
“The NEW Southport Tavern will always be my baby.

“Thanks to everyone that has supported me for the last few years.
“Please continue to support The NEW Southport Tavern.
“Take care, Steve.”
Since The Albert changed to become the Southport Tavern, Steve introduced several changes with a packed programme to enjoy throughout all seven days of the week.
He brought in two new interactive dart boards; Open Mic nights; pool tables, which were free to play on Mondays and Tuesdays; and he revamped the back room into a busy function room.
Saturdays became well known for live music, with the Southport Tavern hosting popular local bands and singers including Quandary, Fag Ash Lil, Absolute Zero, Liv Grace, April Moon and more.
Southport Tavern became a member of Southport PubWatch, with the safety of customers paramount.
