An aerial photo of Churchtown in Southport in the 1960s

This fascinating old aerial photo taken over Southport shows Churchtown in the 1960s, in today’s photo for Throwback Thursday.

In the shot you can see local landmarks which are still there today which include Churchtown Primary School and St Cuthbert’s Church.

The shot was taken after the railway line, which connected Southport and Preston, and the old railway bridge, were taken up. The old bridge was removed in 1964. It was before the health centre was built.

Speaking on Facebook, Mark England said: “As I was too young to remember the old train line running through churchtown, I have only just realised that the school field used to be the old line did it not? That’s possibly why the field has a little extra bit tucked round the corner roughly the width of a couple of train tracks.”

Chris Porter said: “Good old Churchtown! I didn’t realise how big that cinema was. When I was little, it was a ladies fashion shop – think it all got knocked down around 1977 to make way for the Esso Garage. As I seem to recall reading somewhere, the health centre was built in 1973 on the old railway line.”

Stuart Isenberg said: “I used to go on the train from Crossens to attend Churchtown Primary School as well as walk down Balmoral Drive with the family to watch films at the Regent, including the Al Jolson life story series which were in colour…. Top right, opposite the church, is the mid-1820s school building which has housed Churchtown Conservative Club for many years.”
