New housing will finally be built on the site of the former Southport Royal British Legion Club in Southport, removing “an unsightly area” in favour of a new development.
The site, at 62-66 West Street in Southport town centre, has been vacant and overgrown since the building was demolished a number of years ago.
Sefton Council has now granted planning permission to Leo Residential Developments Ltd to build five new three-storey terraced townhouses, together with landscaping and associated works.
A Heritage Statement prepared by Stephen Levrant Heritage Architecture Ltd said: “It is considered that the proposed development will have a beneficial impact in heritage terms upon the character of the Promenade Conservation Area of which it forms a part.
“This view is reached in consideration of the proposed development re-filling a gap site which formerly was part of the urban fabric of the town, and removing an unsightly area of rough ground.
“In addition, it is considered that the design form of the proposed buildings responds positively to the existing character of the area and in particular that the submitted design offers an appropriate and contemporary reinterpretation of local building styles and materials.
“The proposals involve the re-use of a derelict site and the reintroduction of buildings into a previously built-up area, reinstating a lost part of the original street plan form.
“The proposals are sensitive in design quality and characteristics taking design influences from the surrounding area.”
The development was designed by NC Architecture.
In its application, Project Architect Tom Partridge said: “The proposals comprise the construction of five new terraced town houses of three storeys in height with accompanying parking and landscaping.
“The site is the previously developed, now cleared, brownfield land. Previous structures on the site have now been demolished and it has become overgrown with self-seeded vegetation.
“The proposed scheme has been designed to sit comfortably within the context of the existing development surrounding the site.”
