Eating & Drinking Review: The Woollen Pig – Duke Street and Cemetery Street junction, in Birkdale, Southport.

This was my fourth visit to their new-ish location.

It is fast-becoming a very popular venue. I picked a Wednesday, pre-5pm. Great, not too busy.

The sun was out, so I chose to sit outside on one of their benches at the front.

Service was efficient and friendly. There is a real community atmosphere here.

They finish serving food from their own menu mid afternoon, but from Wednesday – Sunday from 3.30pm, The Brass Pig catering van sits alongside their terrace and you are welcome to order and eat from them, whilst enjoying your drinks.

I ordered the Brass Pig Dirty Fries – crispy seasoned fries with pulled pork, cheese and cheese sauce.

A hefty £7 BUT, my goodness, they were awesome.

A generous portion of fried-in-front-of-you fries – which were flavoured with a sprinkle of their own seasoning, cheesy sauce, home-smoked pulled pork and a sprinkling of freshly-sliced and fried onions.

Everything was perfect. Delicious, perfectly-balanced food that left me full and satisfied. It proved to be excellent value for such a quality meal.

Note: it would probably feed two small appetites.

The Woollen Pig itself has a superb pint of Staropramen Czech Pils on draft, which is served in its own branded glass. It’s a real quality beer and difficult to find in the area.

They also like to support local breweries with their 3 hand pulled cask beers.

This should keep even the most ardent CAMRA members happy!

And you need to go there yourself to see the vast array of sweet delights on display in the glass cabinet inside.

What a welcome addition to the local Birkdale scene?

All very chilled and relaxed, it has fast become a favourite venue of mine to relax after work.

And after one visit it could be yours too.

As 10s don’t exist and I’m easily influenced by the delightful management and staff AND the Czech Pils, I will give The Woollen Pig a very strong 9.5.
