A former ballerina is gaining a new army of fans due to her work as a talented resin artist.
Clare Coleman has bounced back from losing her family business during the Covid-19 pandemic last year to launch Odonata Crystals, selling beautiful hand-made jewellery and ornaments.
She is a popular fixture at the regular Southport Makers Market, and also sells her pieces online through her website.
Clare said: “On losing our family business, Barrett & Coe Photography, due to Covid-19, I was given the opportunity to re-evaluate my life and what was truly important to me.
“It has been so hard coming to terms with what my husband Dave and I had lost, given all the hard work, commitment and money we had put into our photography business.
“Dave was the talented photographer and I assisted him with the admin amongst other things.
“We were at that stage where we were starting to make a name for ourselves in Southport and throughout Merseyside and Lancashire.
“We were finally becoming established after six years in the industry, and it is a tough industry to be in, being recognised as one of the top photography studios in Southport and winning awards in the process.
“We had a great time meeting and photographing some of the most amazing families, babies and not to mention the laughs we had with them and their pets! To have it all taken away from us in a matter of months with the first initial lockdown in 2020 was truly heartbreaking. But it was out of our control and we had to find a way to accept what had happened and start rebuilding our lives.
“It was through the love and support of my husband, family and friends during what has been (and for most people) a horrendous 2020, that I found my true calling. I wanted to find a way of helping people through my love of crystals, spiritual beliefs, interest in quantum physics and orgone (lifeforce) energy. Discovering the art of making Orgonites and working really hard on my skills as a resin artist, I decided to take the plunge and pursue a new career selling my own handmade Crystal Energy Pieces and Orgonites.
“I have been on an incredible journey of self healing and development, staying positive and always believing that things happen for a reason. One of the things I did learn is to always look for the good in bad situations. I would never have found this inner creativity and self belief if it wasn’t for us losing our business.”
Clare has a rich background as a supremely talented ballet dancer.
She graduated from the Northern Ballet School in Manchester. She then performed with companies including: Vienna Festival Ballet, Weiner Ballet Theatre & Adonais Ballet Company. Her teaching career consisted of being Ballet Mistress at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) and her overseas posts were Ballet Mistress at Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts in Bangalore India, Ballet Mistress & Rehearsal Director for Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Company in Vietnam and Guest Ballet Mistress at Cairo Contemporary Dance Centre in Egypt.
Clare said: “Previous to opening our photography studio, I was fortunate enough to travel the world teaching Classical Ballet, living and working in countries like China, India, Vietnam and Egypt to name only a few.
“My teaching career was a natural progression from my profession as a Ballet Dancer where I toured with various ballet companies throughout the UK and Europe.
“When Dave and I eventually moved back to the UK nearly eight years ago, I decided to hang up my teaching shoes and commit to helping Dave run the photography business.
“I never thought for one second I would be able to find something else which would trigger my creative side. I never thought I would find a new artistic passion, albeit a passion for arts and craft and incorporate the love and interest I have for crystals with their natural healing properties and interests mentioned earlier.
“I started working really hard on my resin art from October last year and finally made the decision to open my new business Odonata Crystals in February this year!
“I built up my stock making a variety of resin pieces including Jewellery, Crystal Energy Pyramids and Orgonites and launched my new business by opening up a shop through Numonday which is an online sellers platform. I have now got to the stage where I have introduced custom made pieces and am working towards making Memorial Ornaments (resin pieces which incorporate the ashes of beloved family members or pets).
“It is important to me to make my Orgonites as authentic as possible. I use the highest quality resin along with the main core ingredients which are Quartz crystal and a variety of metals including bronze, copper, iron, aluminium and metal powders. I also include a variety of other crystals into the matrix to enhance and vary the power of the Orgonites and Crystal Energy Pieces. These crystals include Clear Quartz, Amethyst Quartz, Rose Quartz, Black Tourmaline, Red Jasper, Carnelian, Amber, Green Agate and Turquoise.
“I firmly believe the energies and intent I use in making my pieces resonate within them. My Crystals are regularly cleansed and charged under full moons and cleansing crystals. I always ensure I am in a calm, positive mood before starting my art, using meditation techniques in the process.
“Every resin piece I create is made with the intention it will find the person who will benefit from it the most. They are made with love, care and enjoyment as I believe the energy that is put into making them resonates within them.
“So, if you would like to support my business and are looking for something unique, please feel free to take a look at my work. You can find me on the Odonata Crystals page on Facebook, where you can access my Numonday shop using the “shop” button or by using this link www.numonday.com/shop/odonata-crystals/ Once you are in the link, just scroll down and you will see all my pieces available for purchase. Many people have lost their jobs or their businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Clare has bounced back to forge a new, thriving business, doing something she loves.
She is urging others in a similar position that she and her husband found themselves in to believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Clare said: “The one piece of advice I would give to anyone who has gone through, or is going through the same thing as we have, is to never give up and to stay positive.
“That things happen for a reason and you will always have love and support from those who are close to you.
“Another journey has begun for me and I am determined to do the best I can to succeed.”
